It’s your time now … How to make this year great!

Will this New Year mean a New You? Take to heart what I write about today and you’ll be in a great position to begin to make the changes you’ve always wanted to make.

So many people try again and again each New Year to become the person that they want to be — slimmer, fitter, healthier, successful in business, confident, addiction free — and yet within a few weeks their goals are already forgotten. Over the years, they get to a point where they scuff at the concept of New Year’s Resolutions because they know that even before they start, they are likely to fail.

That’s a sad and demoralising way to start the New Year, don’t you think?

Many people also think that because they didn’t start on Jan 1, or even the first week of January, that it is too late for them for this year. They’ve already missed the boat. The ship has set sail without them and there’s nothing they can do about it. But NO, forget all that! It’s never too late to make changes. Even small but consistent changes will increase your chances of reaching your goal.

You CAN be successful, you just have to decide that you will be as opposed to agreeing that you won’t.

The mind is habitual. It will always revert to its default setting — until you change that setting.

If you have a history of self-sabotage, beating yourself up because you broke another NY resolution, telling yourself you’re crap at something or that you’re a failure, then that is the default programme that you will continue to run until such time as you decide to change it.

You must take control of your mind and tell it what you want it to do.

It’s not impossible to change a programme but it does take work. It takes consistent work that is absolutely focused upon what you do want (as opposed to what you don’t want) and it takes commitment.

But you’re not expected to be perfect and it’s natural that you’ll make some mistakes. The mind sometimes tries to resist the positive changes because it feels uncomfortable and it gets bitchy about it because the mind loves what is familiar. That’s exactly why you tend to stay stuck!

You’ll probably momentarily revert to old habits or even fall off the wagon completely for a bit, but the most important thing is that you get back on it — start again and never give up. Just like the proverbial child learning to walk. The natural process is falling down, getting up and doing it over and over again until we’re successful. That’s a really positive life skill that we were all born with. The ability to keep going at something until we master it — like walking… none of us ever mastered it the first time but we kept going, through sheer determination to succeed and we got there in the end.

How did we lose that determination? Some of us never did!

Those tend to be the successful people in life and the good news is that if we were born with it — it’s already ours. We can reclaim that skill.

I could give you a list of really successful people who have overcome great obstacles to get to where they are in life, in business, in basketball, on stage, at the North Pole, in space, in the White House, off the streets and clean. None of these people achieved this overnight and I don’t think I have enough fingers to count the number of Richard Branson businesses that have gone belly-up but do you think Richard Branson lays awake at night worrying about a business idea he had that went nowhere? Did he beat himself up for years over it? Do you think it held him back from trying again? If it did, we would probably never be flying around the sky on a Virgin Airways plane!

What do all of these great achievers have in common?

They didn’t give up.

They focused on their goals. Knew what they wanted to achieve and went for it. Consistently. Patiently. Constantly moving in the direction of their goals, little by little each day, never giving up.

But what do we tend to do? Try once and give up!

Those of us who think we’ve tried every diet ever written are often overheard saying: “Oh, nothing works for me. I give up”.

People say: “I try to get ahead but something always seems to keep pulling me back”.

The Mind does what it thinks you want it to do. What are you telling it do to with statements like this? Give up, pull back. These are commands to the mind.

Or with statements such as:

New Year’s Resolutions don’t work for me.

I can’t run.

I have no willpower. I don’t even know where to begin.

I’m too fat to go to the gym.

I can’t go swimming. I look like a beached whale.

I’m so ugly. No wonder nobody will ever date me.

I’m hopeless with money.

There’s nothing I can do about it.

I must have been bad in a previous life and I’m being punished. Perhaps I don’t deserve more/better/happiness.

I don’t want money. Money means nothing to me.

All this abundance stuff is BS.

or the classic one, that I’ll be writing much more about soon… Starseeds always struggle to be successful on this planet.

I could probably write a whole book on just the negative statements that I hear people tell themselves and these are just a few obviously, but did I mention any of the ones you say to yourself repeatedly? Did I?

Words are like magic wands. We spell ourselves with our words and we become our words.

If we continually introduce our small child and say “oh, he’s very shy” — he will become exactly that. We are programming him to be that in a sense because the mind hears the words, picks them up and becomes them.

What words do you repeatedly programme into your own mind?

Take notice of what you say to yourself each day. Write a list of the positive vs. the negative ones as this will give you a clear indication of the type of frequency that you are surrounding yourself with each day — even before you step out the door.

When we are continually using unkind words to ourselves we are, in effect, abusing ourselves. Words are not passive.

Believe it or not, it is completely possible to be in an abusive relationship all on our own and even with no substances or chemicals involved.

Addictions are self-abusive. We use them to soothe ourselves but actually we’re abusing ourselves. Some of us are addicted to mental and emotional self-abuse and don’t even realise it! We abuse ourselves with our words. We bully ourselves with our words and nobody likes a bully so pretty soon we don’t even like ourselves very much either.

But we were not born to be this way. Something has gone wrong in our programming and our default setting has gone askew. It could be past trauma and emotional pain that has done this and we’re carrying that wound. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can change it and I’d recommend we do.

It’s hard to see a world of abundance when we’re living an abusive life but believe me it’s there. If we choose to stay stuck where we are, we may never see it and that would be a great pity — a sad way to live life, but we don’t need to live that way. All the power is within us to change. When we change ourselves we change our lives and we were born to be masters of our own destiny, so come on… will you choose to change yourself this year? Will you choose to change your life?

Let’s turn this thing around and start getting the results and the outcome that we want. Let’s start creating the life we really want rather than just settling for second best and taking the handouts and crappy bits of what life offers or is thrown our way.

It’s time to create the life you really want!

So… next steps. What do you want to change?

WARNING… be careful with your words here and don’t slip back into negative programming. (Read at the top again if you need a reminder).

Set your goal and then start taking action steps towards your goal each and every day.

Easier said than done perhaps and sometimes we need someone to hold our hand and help us do this. Reach out to a friend to help you. I’ve helped hundreds of women to change their life and keep them on track and I have coaches and mentors to help me too.

It’s funny that elite sportsmen and women, singers, speakers, businessmen and women — all the successful ones, all have coaches and mentors and yet WE think we can do it all alone!

How do you think they got to be so successful in the first place??

Because they reached out and got themselves coached and supported to grow and improve themselves. It’s transformational work and I love it. I love seeing the changes in people when they step out and start to become the person they always wanted to be. It excites me. It’s like watching a flower come into full bloom and knowing that it feels fulfilled, blessed and abundant in life.
